I love your blog, so far. I also love your title. I think Gramsci would be pleased. I've spent some time in the Guatemalan highlands. I think it's one of my favorite places. I saw Maximon in Santiago Attitlan and in Zunil.

I found your blog from Justin Delacour's blog. Your analysis is point on. I think the last thing Uribe and company and the US wants is the release of Betancourt. She is, after all, a left of center presidential candidate. She would clearly win any election and the repercussions of "offing" her would be significantly worse than that of getting rid of Gaitan.

Thanks for the comment, I am just getting the hang of this blog stuff (I am more used to forums).

Guatemala is a beautiful country, I love it. I have visited Maximon (San Simon) twice in Zunil - once in 1993 and later in 2006. It is sad to see how few improvements (if any at all, more realistically) have happened since the "peace", especially considering the warmth and beauty of the Mayan and many Guatemalan peoples.

Betancourt's release is probably more certain now I imagine. Chavez and Correa want it to happen to snub Uribe. I am not sure what FARC is getting out of this, I think they are trying to find a legitimate out for themselves now.
